Autumn Self-Care for Mums-to-Be

How to Feel Calm, Comfortable and Nurtured This October

After a never ending summer, the signs of autumn are finally beginning to show. The mornings are a little crisper and the evenings are drawing in. October is the perfect time to slow down, get cosy and give your self some much needed care.

If you’re expecting a little one, you may already be noticing how much your body is changing. Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it can also bring tiredness, aches, restless nights and moments when you simply need to pause.

At Bump & Beyond Therapies, I believe that looking after yourself during pregnancy is just as important as preparing for your baby's arrival. So, as we settle into autumn, here are some simple ways to look after your body and mind, helping you to feel a little more relaxed, comfortable and cared for…

1. Embrace the art of slowing down

With the slower days becoming more noticeable, autumn naturally invites us to take things at a gentler pace. Yet it's easy to keep pushing through busy days, juggling work, family life and all the preparations that come with welcoming a new baby.

One of my favourite books is ‘Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times’, by Katherine May. She explores the idea that, just like nature, we all have seasons when we need to slow down, turn inwards and allow ourselves time to rest and recover. Rather than seeing these quieter periods as something to resist and see as a failure, she encourages us to recognise them as a natural and necessary part of life.

I love this idea, and particularly during pregnancy. As your body works hard to grow and nurture your baby, you may find that your energy levels change and your need for rest increases. Perhaps autumn is the perfect reminder that you don't always need to be productive, ticking off your to-do list or preparing for what comes next. Sometimes, simply being is enough.

Try giving yourself permission to rest without feeling guilty. Enjoy a quiet cup of tea, curl up with a good book, take a gentle walk in the New Forest to look for the pigs, or simply put your feet up for ten minutes. These small moments can become precious opportunities to reconnect with yourself and your changing body.

Remember, you don't have to do everything at once. Just as nature takes its time moving through the seasons, you can give yourself permission to move through pregnancy at your own pace.

Growing a baby is a big job in itself. Perhaps this October, you can take a little inspiration from ‘Wintering’ and embrace the beauty of slowing down, allowing yourself the rest, care and gentleness you deserve.

2. Soothe tired muscles and pregnancy aches

As your bump grows, your posture changes and your body works hard to accommodate your baby's development. You may notice tension in your back, hips, shoulders or legs, particularly after a long day.

Gentle movement, comfortable positioning and taking regular breaks can help you feel more at ease. A warm shower, gentle stretching approved for your stage of pregnancy, or resting with supportive cushions may also help you unwind.

Pregnancy massage can be another lovely way to prioritise relaxation. A treatment tailored to your stage of pregnancy and individual needs can provide dedicated time to rest, feel supported and enjoy some nurturing attention.

At Bump & Beyond Therapies, your comfort and wellbeing always comes first. It's important to choose a suitably trained pregnancy therapist and discuss any health concerns or pregnancy complications before treatment, so your care can be adapted appropriately.

3. Give your skin a little autumn love

As temperatures drop and indoor heating comes on, your skin may begin to feel drier or more sensitive. Pregnancy can also bring changes to your skin, meaning the products that worked well before may not always feel right now.

A simple, gentle routine is a great place to start.

Choose a mild cleanser, follow with a nourishing moisturiser and remember to use sun protection during the day as hormonal changes can cause pigmentation. Drink water regularly and try to avoid introducing lots of new products at once, particularly if your skin is feeling sensitive.

During pregnancy, it's also worth checking skincare ingredients on your usual skin care products. Ingredients like Retinoids, hydroquinone and certain essential oils are ones to avoid.

If you fancy taking your skincare routine a step further, a facial tailored to your individual needs can be a wonderful opportunity to relax while giving your skin some attention.

4. Create your own cosy autumn ritual

Self-care doesn't need to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes, it's about creating a few little rituals that help you feel grounded and comfortable.

Why not try making your evenings a little more relaxing?

* Put on your favourite comfortable pyjamas.

* Enjoy a warm, caffeine-free drink that is suitable for pregnancy.

* Listen to calming music or practise a few minutes of gentle breathing.

* Write down any worries or things you're grateful for.

* Give yourself permission to switch off your phone and enjoy some quiet time.

These small acts of kindness towards yourself can become precious moments in an otherwise busy day.

5. Make time to be nurtured, too

Pregnancy often comes with a long list of things to organise, from appointments and baby essentials to preparing your home for your new arrival. It's easy to focus on everything your baby needs while forgetting that you deserve care and attention as well.

Taking time for yourself isn't an indulgence. It's an opportunity to pause, reconnect with your changing body and enjoy a moment where you don't have to be doing anything for anyone else.

Whether you're looking for pregnancy massage, reflexology or a relaxing facial, choosing a treatment that suits your needs can be a lovely way to make self-care part of your pregnancy journey.

Always let your therapist know how you're feeling and check that a treatment is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

A little autumn reminder from Bump & Beyond Therapies

As October unfolds, remember that you don't need to have everything figured out. Some days you'll feel full of energy; other days, you may simply want to rest. Both are perfectly okay.

Give yourself permission to slow down, listen to your body and enjoy the little moments along the way. You deserve to feel supported, comfortable and cared for throughout your journey into motherhood.
